UPS’s Happy Returns division is piloting a new artificial intelligence (AI) tool designed to combat “decoy returns fraud.” This specific type of fraud involves customers returning a different, often cheaper or damaged, item than the one originally purchased. Such practices lead to significant financial losses for retailers.

Addressing Return Fraud in Retail
The retail sector consistently grapples with various forms of return fraud. Decoy returns, however, present a unique challenge. In these instances, customers exploit return policies by swapping out high-value or new products for lower-value, used, or even broken items. This deceptive tactic costs businesses substantial amounts annually, eroding profit margins and increasing operational expenses.
Introducing Return Vision Technology
Happy Returns developed the new software, named Return Vision, to directly counter this issue. The AI-powered tool utilizes advanced image comparison technology. It meticulously verifies returned products against original images provided by the retailers themselves. This comparison ensures that the item being returned matches the product initially purchased by the customer.
How the System Works
When a customer initiates a return, Return Vision scans the physical product. Its AI algorithms then analyze key visual characteristics. The software compares these features with the authenticated product images from the retailer’s database. If a discrepancy arises, the system flags the return, allowing retailers to take appropriate action before processing a refund or exchange.
Early Adoption and Future Impact
Several retailers are currently implementing this innovative capability. Everlane, a prominent apparel company, stands among the early adopters utilizing Return Vision. Other undisclosed partners are also piloting the system. This initial phase provides crucial real-world data for refining the technology and demonstrating its effectiveness.
