JBS, one of the world’s largest meat producers, has announced a significant shift in its environmental strategy, abandoning its ambitious target to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions across its entire supply chain by 2040. The company cited “immense execution challenges” as the primary reason for this policy reversal, marking a notable change in its long-term climate commitments.

The Abandoned Climate Commitment
The original 2040 goal aimed to neutralize the company’s total greenhouse gas footprint. This ambitious target encompassed emissions generated throughout its vast global supply chain, a complex network extending from livestock rearing to processing and distribution. Achieving net-zero status requires balancing the amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere with an equivalent amount removed.
Challenges Driving the Decision
JBS specifically pointed to “immense execution challenges” as the impetus for discontinuing its net-zero objective. The scope and complexity of decarbonizing a global food production system, particularly one reliant on agricultural inputs, present considerable hurdles. These difficulties involve various factors, from technological limitations to the vast number of suppliers and operational variables across different regions.
Dropping Scope 3 Targets
In conjunction with abandoning the overarching net-zero goal, JBS also confirmed it will no longer pursue its Scope 3 emissions reduction targets. Scope 3 emissions represent indirect greenhouse gas emissions that occur in a company’s value chain, both upstream and downstream. This category includes emissions from purchased goods and services, transportation, waste generation, and the agricultural activities of its suppliers and customers. Dropping these targets significantly alters the company’s approach to addressing its broader environmental impact.
